Her: I can’t see to steer when your hand is there.
Me: Then I can’t hold you up.
Her: Oh.
Me: Try putting one foot on the pedal and keeping the other foot on the ground.
Her: I can’t.
(pause)
Her: I need to move the pedal up.
Me: Put your other foot down and move the pedal up.
Her: I can’t.
Me: Yes you can. Just put your foot down.
Her: I’m going to fall.
Me: No you’re not. (foot goes down) Did you fall?
Her: No. (pause) I can’t get the pedal up. (Angrily kicks at pedal)
Me: Just move it up with your foot. You won’t fall.
Her: I can’t.
Me: You can’t, okay. We’ll try again next year then. Let’s go home.
The emotional scars will probably be permanent.
