Hmm. I like naming things, but it's hard to do from afar without getting a chance to observe their personalities! I'm torn between wanting to give every animal in my life a literary or mythological name and being fond of generic human names.

I've been wanting to name a black or grey male cat Grendel for years. Grendel and Caliban, perhaps: a nice pair of literary Others for the budding post-colonialist critic.

Probably the two most appealing male names ever are Charlie and Sam. Charles and Samuel are dignified and catly, but can be shortened to the all-important cooey, affectionate Sammie and Charlie. Or Sam and Chuck if you want to be monosyllabic. Also, Sam and Max -- two characters in a computer game I played as a kid -- are a great pair of names.

Ivan and Vlad. It's dead Russian night here on the history channel, so I have Slavic names on the brain. Dmitri, Aleksey, Nikolai, Fyodor, Lev, Leo?

Actually, both Lev and Leo mean 'lion,' as you probably know, and so would be excellent names for a cat, I think. Ari is Hebrew for lion (my cat is named Ariel -- 'lion of god'), and I think that Llew is Welsh?

Trickster gods: Loki (love this for a cat!), Puck, Raven, Anansi, Hermes. I know someone with a cat called Jester.

Cain and Abel. Okay, this would probably be tempting fate, but I can't think of any Biblical brothers except for maybe Jacob and Esau, which isn't much better.

Socrates and Aristotle, Leon and Noel, Castor and Pollux ... okay, I'm officially out of names.

Actually the names I like best for them are Jade and Copper.

But the judges haven't seen them yet. Stay tuned.

Rebecca, I can send you a picture of a robot vacuum. Would that do?

Do we win something for commenting? I would love one of those fabulous fancy little robot vacuumns, or maybe a chia pet (the cats would likely enjoy this more).

Just kidding.

I like cats, but I am terribly allergic. Name suggestions? I don't have any, but I am commenting as requested.

I swear, the first one (the fuzzy one) looks like a Coco, and the second one looks like a Roger. Can't get past those names at the moment, but I'll stare at their adorable faces a little longer, see if I can't come up with something more cat-like...

Achilles:

During his infancy his mother plunged him in the Styx, thus making his body invulnerable except for the heel by which she held him. ( not that this kitten was plunged into a river by his mother.... but the whole water thing is there.)

Ajax:
Apparently was Achilles hunting partner.

Frick and Frack?!
Laurel and Hardy?
